A Practice Built on
Patience and Clarity
Mali Advisory was founded on the belief that adults in or approaching later life deserve access to financial education that is calm, considered, and free from the pressures of sales.
← Back to HomeHow Mali Advisory Came to Be
Mali Advisory was established in Phuket in 2019 by a financial educator who had spent the previous decade noticing a consistent gap: adults in their forties, fifties, and beyond who had worked hard, saved where they could, and yet had never had the opportunity to sit with someone and understand the basics of how their money actually moved. The courses and workshops available tended to assume prior knowledge, or were oriented toward active trading, or were sold by institutions with something to sell.
The practice takes its name from the Thai word for jasmine — a flower common in Thai culture as a symbol of patience and of something that rewards attention over time. That sensibility shapes how the programmes are designed: a deliberate pace, written materials that participants can keep and refer to, and a facilitation style that welcomes questions rather than treating them as interruptions.
The programmes are based in Patong, Phuket, and serve a mix of long-term residents, retirees, and people in transition — Thai nationals and expatriates alike — who share a common interest in understanding their personal finances more clearly. The practice does not sell investment products or manage money; it teaches.

Mali Advisory — founding principle
The Mali Advisory Team
Sunanta Lertsakun
Lead Facilitator & Founder
Sunanta designed all three Mali Advisory programmes. She brings fifteen years of experience in financial literacy work in Thailand and Southeast Asia, with a particular interest in how adults in later career stages process financial information.
Philip Whitmore
Programme Coordinator
Philip manages scheduling, materials preparation, and participant communications. He has a background in adult education administration and ensures each session runs with the same care in logistics as in content.
Nattaporn Kamjorn
Content & Research Associate
Nattaporn keeps the programme materials current with changes in Thai tax regulations, mutual fund classifications, and investment product structures, ensuring the content reflects the regulatory environment participants will actually encounter.
Standards We Hold
Clear Separation from Sales
Mali Advisory holds no affiliation with fund managers, banks, or insurance providers. No participant is ever directed toward a product. This separation is maintained as a matter of practice principle, not simply policy.
Regularly Updated Materials
Programme materials — particularly the Tax Allowances programme — are reviewed each year against current Thai Revenue Department publications to ensure participants receive accurate contextual information.
Controlled Group Sizes
Programmes are capped at twelve participants. This is a deliberate decision: smaller groups allow the facilitator to address questions in real time and adapt emphasis as the session develops.
Participant Privacy
Participant names and contact information are held securely and used only for programme communications. Mali Advisory does not share participant data with third parties for marketing purposes.
Transparent Scope
Every programme description states clearly what the sessions will cover and what they will not. Participants are directed to licensed accountants or advisors for decisions that fall outside the scope of education.
Post-Programme Feedback
Each programme closes with a structured feedback form. Responses are reviewed to identify where explanations were unclear or where participants felt the pace needed adjustment, informing the next revision cycle.
What Guides the Work
Financial education for adults in Thailand is a field that is either too sparse or too commercially motivated. Mali Advisory occupies a different position: a small practice, deliberately modest in scale, that works from the assumption that adults who want to understand their finances are capable of doing so when the material is presented with care.
The programmes are designed around the idea that participants should leave each session with something they can use — a reference card, a completed template, a clearer set of questions to bring to their accountant. The sessions are not designed to make participants feel that they need to return for more; they are designed to make participants more self-sufficient in their thinking.
The adult financial education context in Thailand has particular characteristics. Many adults 40 and over have accumulated savings through employment — provident funds, property, informal family arrangements — without having had the opportunity to understand the structures they are part of. The Tax Allowances Reading Programme, for instance, exists because many working adults in Thailand do not fully understand the allowances they are already entitled to, let alone how to plan for those that become relevant in later working years.
Mali Advisory believes that understanding is better than dependency — that a participant who leaves a programme with genuine comprehension is more prepared for the next stage of their financial life than one who leaves with a product recommendation. That is the principle the practice was built on, and the one it continues to work from.
