What People Said

RH

Richard H.

British, resident Patong since 2017

I attended the Investing Basics programme not expecting to understand much — I have avoided the topic for years because everything written about it seems designed for someone already comfortable with the vocabulary. This was different. The facilitator assumed nothing and explained things in the order that made logical sense. I left with a reference card I have actually used. Three evenings felt like the right amount of time.

The Tax Allowances programme was the one I needed. I had been filing my own taxes for twenty years and had no idea about several of the allowances that apply to me. The facilitator was careful to say that she could explain the regulations but not advise me on my own return — which is honest, and made me trust the content more. The reference packet is well-organised and I have shared it with my sister.

April 2026 — Tax Allowances Reading Programme

I did the cashflow map workshop because I run a small business and the line between business money and personal money has always been blurry for me. Going through the template with someone there to answer questions made me see exactly where the confusion was coming from. I came in expecting a lecture and found something more like a guided working session. Worth a full Saturday.

My wife suggested I go. I was sceptical — I assumed it would either be too basic or try to sell me something at the end. It was neither. The group was small and the questions people asked were sensible. I went back for the tax programme three months later. The only thing I would say is that I wished the evening sessions were a little closer together, but that might not suit everyone.

April 2026 — Investing Basics, then Tax Allowances

JL

Janet L.

Canadian, 54, Chalong

I had read about RMF accounts several times and could never quite get the logic of them to stick. After the tax allowances sessions it finally did. The facilitator built up to it slowly rather than just presenting a list of facts. I went away and had a conversation with my accountant that I could not have had before — I knew what to ask, which is something I value more than being told what to do.

April 2026 — Tax Allowances Reading Programme

NP

Niran P.

Thai, architect, Phuket Town

The cashflow workshop gave me something concrete — a completed one-page picture of where my money goes. I had tried making spreadsheets before but they always became too complicated and I stopped updating them. The printed template is just detailed enough. I did the exercise in the session and it was more useful than any app I have tried.

Cashflow Map — March 2026

A Couple Approaching Retirement Clarity

The Situation

A couple in their early fifties — one Thai, one British — had reached the point where they wanted to think seriously about what retirement might look like for them financially. They had savings in different places and no single picture of their combined cashflow.

What They Did

Both attended the full-day cashflow map workshop. They worked through their individual templates separately first, then discussed them together over lunch. The facilitator helped them see where their combined picture differed from what either of them had assumed.

What Changed

They left with two completed maps and a shared list of questions to bring to their accountant. Three months later, they reported that the conversation with their accountant had been more useful than any previous one — because they arrived knowing what their cashflow actually looked like.

"We have been meaning to do this for three years. One Saturday was enough to get us unstuck."

Tax Allowances — February 2026

A Self-Employed Consultant Finding Allowances She Had Missed

The Situation

A 48-year-old consultant working independently in Phuket had always paid her taxes through an accountant but had never really understood the allowances involved. She suspected she was missing some but did not know where to begin.

What She Did

She attended the Tax Allowances Reading Programme over four evenings. By the second session she had identified two allowance categories she had not been using. The facilitator was clear that this was educational context, not advice, and directed her to verify with her accountant.

What Changed

After the programme she met with her accountant and confirmed that she had indeed not been utilising the life insurance premium allowance or the RMF option available to her. The reference packet helped her have a precise conversation rather than a vague one.

"I knew I was missing something. I just didn't know enough to ask the right questions before."

Investing Basics — January 2026

A Retired Teacher Starting from the Beginning

The Situation

A recently retired teacher in her early sixties had received a lump-sum pension payment and felt she should understand her options — but found all available material either too technical or too oriented toward people already in the market.

What She Did

She attended the Investing Basics programme. She described it as the first time she had sat in a room with someone explaining financial concepts at a pace that assumed she was intelligent but had no prior exposure to the subject.

What Changed

She left with the reference card and the reading list. Six weeks later she returned for the Tax Allowances programme. She reported feeling that she could now have an informed conversation with a financial advisor rather than simply following instructions she did not understand.

"I'm not trying to become an investor. I just wanted to understand what I was looking at. That's what I got."
